How to Finish Pine for Outdoor Use in Amador County, California

If you have pine wood furniture, applying a finish can protect it from the sun and other unforgiving exterior weather elements in Amador County, CA.

Depending on the object, you can try three main types of finishes. Those made of polyurethane, paint or epoxy work well to preserve pine objects and give them a shiny touch.

After applying the right finish, your wood will be protected and will be able to withstand regular use outdoors.

In this article, we will be sharing some tips and guides on how to finish pine particularly using polyurethane:

Here we go:

Using polyurethane

Place the canvas on the floor in a well-ventilated area. Find a place with plenty of air circulation, preferably outside the house or near an open door, to apply the finish.

Use a canvas to place your piece on and avoid staining the floor or other places with polyurethane.

If you are sensitive to strong odors, use a mask when working with polyurethane.

Seal the surface with diluted Polyurethane.

Before applying the finish, dilute a small amount of polyurethane with mineral alcohol in a 2: 1 ratio. Dip a brush into the sealant and apply it to the surface of the object in long strokes.

The sealant helps the finish to set better and makes the pine last longer.

If you notice any dripping, correct it with the brush before it messes the object.

Apply A Layer Of Polyurethane Over The Sealant.

Allow the piece to dry for 24 hours, then dip a brush in undiluted polyurethane.

Brush the object in long strokes and thin layers, correcting drips as you apply.

Let the polyurethane dry for 24 hours before adding new layers if necessary.

Add 1 Or 2 More Layers Of The Product.

This amount is recommended to give the pine a more resistant finish. Apply at least 1 or 2 more layers of polyurethane, allowing each to dry between applications.

Correct Lumps or Irregular Areas.

After the last coat has dried, cut off any bumps with a razor blade. Cut just enough to smooth out the bumpy areas, then sand the entire surface with 400 grit sandpaper to get a very uniform finish.

Work carefully to avoid cutting the wood or scraping the entire finish.

Clean the piece with a damp cloth to remove the dust generated by the sanding before adding the final polyurethane coating.

Choose A Polyurethane Finish.

After smoothing the uneven areas, dip a brush in polyurethane and apply a final coat. Work as evenly as possible, checking for stains or drips, and let it dry for 24 hours.

If the final layer is smooth and uniform, it means that you have applied the polyurethane finish correctly.

It may be necessary to smooth out certain areas and apply another layer of the product if, after drying, there are lumps and stains in the place.

Reapply the finish every 2 or 3 years. Polyurethane finishes, on average, last this period. If the wood looks dull or you see signs of weather damage, restore the piece with a new finish.
