Cabinet Refinishing isn’t Only for Kitchen Cabinets

One of the most popular kitchen renovations doesn’t involve an entire remodel; it only involves the kitchen cabinets. Trendy cabinets go out of style and cabinets in general gather grime and begin to look worn over time. Sometimes the best thing you can do to revive the kitchen cabinets is to refinish them. Most can be cleaned, sanded, and painted with ease. Some may even benefit from cleaning, sanding, and applying a new coat of polyurethane, or clear coat.

How to Refinish Your Kitchen Cabinets

  • Disassemble – Cabinet doors and drawer facings must be removed from the cabinet frames.
  • Clean – Use a good cleaner to remove the dirt and grime. Pay special attention to the areas that are touched often.
  • Remove Hardware – Remove all hardware; handles and hinges.
  • Sand – Lightly sand to remove additional grime and to lightly rough up the surface.
  • Paint – Paint using your chosen colors. Get creative and use different colors within the same color family for decorative cabinets.
  • Allow to Dry – Allow the cabinets to dry completely before touching them.
  • Replace Hardware – Replace the handles and hinges. Take the project a step further by installing brand new hardware to really make a big visual impact.
  • Reassemble – Reassemble the cabinets and drawers. Step back and enjoy your handiwork!

Before And After of Damaged Cabinets

Consider taking your project a step beyond a simple refinishing project. Most glass cutters will cut cabinet door glass to fit for a very affordable price. Remove portions of the door and replace them with glass to create an entirely new appearance.

This refinishing method may be used for nearly any other piece of furniture. All it takes is a single search on Google or Pinterest to discover several great ideas for refinishing furniture. You’ll see china cabinets, hall trees, kitchen cabinets, and a variety of do it yourself ideas that people have brought to life.

So the next time you see an amazing piece of furniture on craigslist or in a yard sale, don’t be afraid to pick it up and turn it into something amazing.

This is just a rough walkthrough with very few details, obviously, but you get the idea. It is a project that takes time and effort. You may be able to finish it in 2 week’s if you have the time to dedicate to it.
