Should I Clean My Walls Before Painting The Kitchen?

Amateur and novice painters often make the mistake of not properly cleaning or preparing interior surfaces before they begin the painting process. Unfortunately this mistake can cause big problems down the line. A few of the symptoms of improper cleaning or surface contamination are bubbling, chipping, or peeling paint.

Today we want to talk about some of the important reasons why you should clean surfaces before starting any interior painting.

You’ll Get Longer Lasting Results

Paint adheres more evenly and effectively to a clean surface. Proper cleaning and preparation means the new paint you’ve chosen will last for several years and hold up better to regular wear and tear. If you’re like many households, and regular wear and tear means that your walls see constant rubbing and bumping from children, teenagers or pets, then you should use a quality paint- not the cheapest one on the shelf. It will make future touchup blend in better as well.

You’ll Have Fewer Visible Flaws

Even if you think the dirt or grime is stuck to the wall pretty good, painting right over it could still cause imperfections on the surface if the brush or roller drags a little bit or the water in the paint activates some of the contamination. While paint will do an adequate job of covering up dirt stains- such as that spot in the hallway where your cat or dog likes to rub, we also suggest you give it a light sanding with a sanding sponge to remove even more than just cleaning will do on its own.

It Will Make Future Cleaning Easier

As long as you use a paint with at least an eggshell sheen or greater your newly painted kitchen will have a nice, smooth surface that is easy to clean. Dust and other airborne contaminants are easily wiped away.

And, as long as you get to them right away, grease or other tacky substances can usually be washed off using a wet cloth and dish soap. This allows you to simply wipe down any food splatter on your newly painted kitchen walls while you’re doing the other parts of your kitchen clean up routine.

But if the walls weren’t cleaned well prior to the new paint job being started, you might just wipe the paint right off of the surface while you are cleaning! Wouldn’t that be terrible?
