6 Things You Won’t See On HGTV’s Interior Painting Special
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Or at least that’s how the saying goes
If HGTV or the DIY channel existed back then I imagine that they could have turned the 7-12 years that it took to build the roman colosseum into a nice 13 episode season.
Vos can operor iallud! (You can do it!)
Can you imagine Bobius Josephus Vilachio (Bobius is the ancient Roman, fake, realization of the original voice of DIY home improvement- Bob Vila) taking his chisel to the “entrance” sign as the closing credits role and the theme music starts playing?
All I can tell you for sure is those 13 episodes would open with Bobius starting to dig the footings for the foundation and would end with the chisel scene. Everything in between would be filled with excitement, intrigue, worry and maybe just a little bit of sadness!
What in the heck does this have to do with you?
Even though this is an extreme example –The 7-12 years of work being condensed into 13 episodes. The point is that most of the process in construction is boring, And interior painting is no exception. That is why you don’t see these 6 important preparation steps talked about before the interior renovations starts.
These are some of the boring things we do prior to starting any interior house painting:

Take the pictures and art off of the wall
We take photo’s of your whole room so that your decorations are reinstalled in the correct place. Then all of your art and decorations are moved to a safe location where they won’t be knocked over or stepped on.

Remove plug covers and curtains
We take the light switch and plug covers off and put them into a bucket, your curtains are removed from the wall and usually the curtain rod hardware is also removed.

Move furniture
Small pieces of your furniture are moved out of the room or to one side in large rooms.

Cover the floors and furniture that can’t be moved
We mask the walls around the perimeter of the room by placing masking tape or tape and 12” paper on top of the baseboards. Your remaining furniture gets covered with plastic masking film. Then plastic lined, interior only, tarps are used to cover your floors. We also put them on top of the plastic that is protecting your furniture to create an additonal layer of protection.

Patch drywall and fill nail holes
We fill nail holes with a paintable putty and texture large patches to match the wall.

Clean the surfaces
Cobwebs, dust and other contaminates are removed from the surfaces that are being painted. This can range from a quick dusting to actual cleaning with soap and rags. Also all dust created during the patch work is cleaned up.Now that you’ve read it, I’m sure you can tell that none of those things would make for an interesting TV show because they are boring. But all of them form the foundation for an excellent paint job.
